The Gaslight Anthem
The '59 Sound
SideOneDummy
The best thing to come out of N.J. since Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi, The Gaslight Anthem’s The ’59 Sound is punk rock drenched in Americana and nostalgia. Some bands sing to the ears, but TGA sings to the heart. If you're already a fan of this band you'll notice a much nicer fit and finish on the musicianship and vocals compared to previous releases. The melodies are much smoother and the voices have a new level of sincerity and maturity. As a fan you'll probably also notice the band hasn’t deviated too much from their gruff, familiar sound. I'm not saying that the Gaslight boys have just decided to sit back and rest on their laurels, I'm saying that they haven't alienated anyone with some kind of crazy new sound. Newbies might compare them to a less aggressive Rise Against with a touch of Neil Young’s early rebelliousness. The astute ear will pick up on a Bruce Springsteen reference or two along with a few blue collar-isms that boarder on rockabilly. The overall product is brilliant and catchy. It's memorable and comfortable. The songs feel like old favorites--like you've already had life changing experiences while listening to them.
