Evil Needles Horror Clothes

It might be too late for Halloween, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a spooky Christmas or New Year’s Eve. Patricia Valery of Evilneedles.com has taken on an interesting project that combines her unusual clothing design skills with the skills of another Orlando, Fla. female artist. Valery and LuAndra Whitehurst teamed up to make a limited collection of women’s tops featuring modern interpretations of vintage horror flicks.
“Modern horror movies are so preoccupied with snarling, fast moving, super-zombies, and sex crazed, seductive vampires that I think many people have forgotten about the oldies like Nosferatu and Night of the Living Dead,” says Valery. “I mean, CGI is amazing, and today’s films are in a realm all their own,” she continues, “but I wanted something ‘low-budget’ and ‘Plan 9-ish’ so LuAndra and I hit the drawing board and created something new and kitschy.”

The gimmick behind Valery’s craft is that she designs all of the clothing herself. From conception, to cutting, to sewing, each piece is made in true D.I.Y. fashion, and because of this, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Another trick is to keep the pieces limited in production – only 100 of each in this case, making them all the more unique.
The artwork on the Night of the Living Dead tee is derived from the original movie poster. Valery used some basic Photoshop skills to tweak the image just enough to make it fit her smallest shirt pattern. Rather than use ink the image has been bleached or “discharged” for a soft, vintage feel the first time you wear it.

The Nosferatu image is a scratch built design done in pen and ink by Whitehurst. Using still shots from the movie she was able to capture the appearance of the vampire; but used her own sense of style to soften him up and bring him into the 21st Century.
“There’s more to come,” hints Valery: “we have a handful of drawings including the Last Man on Earth, the Human Monster, Creature from the Haunted Sea and Plan 9 from Outer Space that we’ll be releasing throughout 2009. The final one will come out in October and will be, in my opinion, the best one.”
