The Bottle Rockets’ Lean Forward blurs the fine line between cool indie country and my dad’s corny pop country. Let's start with the album artwork. A simple, old school tweed amp is cool no matter what generation you claim to belong to. But once you pop it in and hit play things get a little convoluted. The songs are generally slow paced with folksy undertones and semi-swanky riffs, but the lyrics are - by no stretch of the imagination - written by a 20-something year old misplaced punk. What keeps me coming back to this one is that it slightly reminds me of Tom Petty. Don't get me wrong, it aint a dead-ringer: there's just enough Petty-ish-ness for me to give it the ol' seal of approval.
