Here’s a band that makes 40 fingers sound like 81. Fire & Hail might just be the best damn banjo driven album to come about in the last 20 years. If Appalachian gothic isn’t your thing, it will be after you hear this. Some folks call bluegrass front porch music, but the .357 String Band is “streetgrass,” which will bring the front porch and the whole house down in a heartbeat. With a mandolin, six-string, slap bass, and banjo all on tap, these boys make the kind of music that is best heard from the other side of a chain link fence in a dark honky tonk. Forget what you know about roots music, it’s time for an upgrade.
