Ever so frightening, Pinky 500 of the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, opens up about playing derby, being a co-captain of the travel team, and about having tattooed eyebrows.  A founding member of the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, Pinky has been there through it all and seen a lot. She has become one of the main pieces of the teams puzzle due to her amazing blocking skills. Pinky has also taken the time to remain a big part of the league’s production as part of various committees. She’s a real derby girl, and certainly does it for the right reasons, hitting girls onto the floor!

When did you start playing derby? Rocky Mountain the only league you've played with?

I am a founding member of RMRG, so I’ve been involved with flat track roller derby since mid 2004. Yes, RMRG is the only league I have played on. Get there!

Do you pivot as much as you block?

I don’t pivot nearly as much as I bring up the rear. I like to switch it up every once in awhile as I feel it makes me more of a well rounded player.

What’s the best thing about being a blocker, rather than a jammer? Some say the jammers are the most important players on a team, what do you have to say about this?

The best part about being a blocker is teamwork. All positions are puzzle pieces ready to be fit together to make a spectacular derby-riffic picture. That and the blocking, of course. Great way to release the blues.

We always say our jammers are only as good as their blockers. Every skater is important in their role on the track; the chain becomes weak when you are missing a link.

How do you have to time/effort/etc. to be a player for the Red Ridin’ Hoods, co-captain of the travel team 5280-Fight Club, and be highly involved in bout production? How do you have time for a "real life"?

Well, I am no longer on BP duty, three years of that was more than enough [laughs]. I am on various committees within our league, though...including, but not limited to Training, Recruitment, Web/MySpazz, etc.

I make time for my "real life" by balancing out my derby schedule and prioritizing my agenda. I budget my time in all areas so that way I don’t have a breakdown. “Me” time and my employment come first.  Being a DJ and performance come second to derby, always. Social activities are thrown in the stew of madness somewhere, of course.

When acting as co-captain for Rocky Mountain’s travel team, what was your advice going into the Western Regionals last weekend? What are your thoughts on how your team did?

Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork. Play your best and always have your sister’s back. Don’t give up! So long as you play as a team and to the best of your ability, you are golden.  Our team is amazing. We play with passion, teamwork, and courage. Oh hell, I’m not supposed to let you kit-kats know I’m so nice and cuddly! Back to business!

How does your makeup not sweat off during a bout? Do girls you come up against give you a double take when they see how made up you are? Does this help with intimidation?

[Laughs] Hmm...I guess it depends on the type of makeup you are using. I don’t spray coat it or anything like that. My eyebrows are tattooed on so those puppies are not slidin’ off my mug anytime soon! Some gals seem to think it’s scary, but that’s their bag. Why would someone be afraid of eye makeup? We’ll never know. I think it’s more distracting than anything.

What is the next big thing coming up for Rocky Mountain Rollergirls? Next best thing for flat track roller derby in general?

Well, everything is a big thing for RMRG. We take pride in everything we do. Next best thing for flat track roller derby?  Hmm, I see our sport getting more and more popular each and every day. Maybe one day people will realize what we do is real, raw, live action and not some choreographed dance routine.

Why are you a rollergirl?

I am a rollergirl because I enjoy the workout, sisterhood, giving back to the community, bonds, and examples we make. Oh, yeah...and knockin’ a chick to the floor and only having to worry about the possibility of sitting out on a penalty isn’t so bad either. Roller derby keeps me out of trouble and my brain in line, in more ways than anyone will ever know.

YAY Pinky! Great Article!!

Speaking as one of those chicks you've knocked to the floor -- fantabulous, Pinky! You rock!

Awwww Pinky 500 finally getting some well-deserved recognition. By the way, the 500 refers to how many jammers she has devoured. As I like to say on the mic, P5 is truly a death-ray of black sunshine.

Aw. I just read the comments on here.
You guys and gals are the best.
Thanks for making me blush.
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday.

Love & hisses,
P5

I hope to see you next month in Denver for regionals!
