Madison: Roller Derby Style
When visiting Madison, there are a few local hang-outs derby fans shouldn’t miss; not only because of their great food and drinks, but also because you might run into a Mad Rollin’ Doll off the track.
The requisite first stop is the unaffected Willy Street Pub & Grill, a.k.a. the Wisco, at 852 Williamson St. A supporter of the Mad Rollin’ Dolls since day one and host of the first ever league meeting, the Wisco remains a favorite of the Dolls. Be sure to grab a Jello shot for a dollar and check out the always retro drink special.
For a truly one-of-a-kind Madison experience, be sure to visit the Weary Traveler, 1201 Williamson St. Located in the heart of the bohemian Willy Street neighborhood, the Weary Traveler is know for its unique atmosphere and menu as well as a good tap selection.
Last on your derby tour of Madison’s east side, be sure to stop off at Mickey’s Tavern, 1524 Williamson St. A classic house converted into a bar, Mickey’s shouts “local tavern,” but with a menu that features surprisingly upscale food.
Also on the east side: The Glass Nickel, Madison’s favorite and most original pizza joint. We’ll stack the Glass Nickel’s pie up against Chicago’s deep dish any day of the week. The Harmony Bar and Grill; a rare combination of sports bar and neighborhood bar, the Harmony has great food and drinks that pack a punch.

Best of all, you can check out all five bars without driving. They are close enough to walk comfortably, but are also located on Madison’s Capital City Bike Trail. Its well-maintained asphalt surface is great for biking, walking, or skating. Get a map here or at any local bicycle store.
If you don’t own a bike or didn’t bring yours to Madison, you can use one for free courtesy of the Red Bikes Project run by Budget Bicycle Center. A refundable $40 deposit for the bike and $20 for a lock gets you a red spray-painted bike to use for up to 6 months. You can also rent a bike from Machinery Row Bicycles for $20 a day.
Where do you Dolls eat breakfast, anyway? The morning after a bout, derby girls and fans alike need food. If you’re looking for a classic, simple breakfast, try The Avenue Bar. You just might find a team or two having a post-bout team brunch. Be sure to try the mimosas, made with fresh squeezed orange juice! If you’re looking for a Wisconsin style brunch – big portions with lots of cheese – you can’t beat the Come Back In. The highlight: $1 Bloody Marys or Mimosas with breakfast.
